A Renaissance in postmodernity
The work of Nori Ushijima (Kumamoto, 1956) represents an eclectic explosion of contemporary expression merged with classical techniques of the great masters. Indeed, it is difficult to understand his work without being acquainted with his long stay in Italy that marked his style as he acquired the techniques of restoration and engraving by the hand of Renaissance masters. Guided by figures such as Michelangelo but also Picasso, Ushijima proposes a rereading of the history of art through his vision in which he synthesizes the pictorial movements from the Renaissance to the avant-garde.
His work gives us a refreshing look as it opens new horizons in the pictorial field: figuration and abstraction are masterfully interspersed spilling color just to dye their complex dream constructions, all which emerge from the subconscious as an intuitive, primal and emotional gesture. His works are like living beings that, depending on the mood or the moment, provoke different emotions in the spectator.
Ushijima is first and foremost a master of the techniques of painting that dominates and vindicates as a means to approach human emotions.
